Biography

Born in Ann Arbor, MI Josh Garrett (aka. JGarrett) grew up with the nutrient rich musical environment found on Detroit radio in the ’80s when Talking Heads, Prince, The Police, and Kraftwerk shared space with Front 242, Cybotron, and Cajmere. Later on Josh was involved in the Detroit Techno scene during the pivotal years in the 1990s as the second wave of Detroit labels and artists reached critical mass.

Josh has been producing and performing electronic music since 1995. His very first live performance was at ExAT at Zoot’s Coffeehouse in Detroit in October 1995. Since then he has had numerous releases under a variety of aliases (including Xyn, Linoleum Head, Countered) across a number of labels (such as From 0-1, Super 6, Component). His releases have consistently received DJ and radio support, charting on the CMJ dance charts as well as garnering solid reviews. Josh has performed on the same bill with acts such as Gridlock, The Automatic Message, Freaky Chakra, Mimetic, Mlada Fronta, Cyanwave, and many others.

Josh is currently involved in starting up a new imprint, Subspec, with former Component Records head honcho, Rob Galbraith.

A dual US / Canadian citizen, Josh relocated from Michigan to Vancouver, BC in 2000 and currently resides in Metro Vancouver.

The Music

JGarrett’s music is strongly rooted in the influences of his days in the Detroit Techno scene. While focusing on Acid and Dub styles of Techno an undercurrent of Detroit sensibilities provides the foundation for his productions.

Josh has been continuously honing his live performances over the years. He is known for delivering spontaneous and solid live sets that take the audience through slippery Acid to deep Dub to driving Techno, funky Electro and back around full circle.

JGarrett’s latest release is the deep Dub Techno EP “Vaporizer” on From 0-1 Records featuring remixes from Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum / Reflective Records), John Massey, Kris Moon, and Milkplant.
